There are many plants and flowers that have captured my interest and the Brugmansia, better known as Angel Trumpets, are in my top ten.
The flowers hang and seem to drip from the branches. They come in several colors, from pink, peach, orange, white, yellow and multi colored assortments. The petals can be narrow, shredded, double, or triple edged.
They are so easy to propagate, simply cut a small green branch, dip it in root hormone and place it in water until rooted. I understand you can simply plant them from cutting and cultivate from seeds, however I have never done that.
They grow quickly and like their water and food*. I have found the more you feed the more they bloom. They can be cultivated as bushes or small standard trees. I understand that when the branches form a ‘V’ from the trunk then it is either old or strong enough to bloom.
There are two drawbacks that don’t bother me, but you should consider prior to planting. First, the foliage and trunks are not very attractive all of the time. The second is that they are toxic if ingested. The trick to that is if you have roaming animals or children that would ingest them take care to either protect your loved ones or plants or both. We live in zone 11 and have numerous plants that no one ever thinks of as poisonous but are planted everywhere. I say this because when I was a young mom with my first child he decided to taste a dieffenbachia plant, which is toxic. This was unbeknownst to me but luckily, thank the lord, nothing happened, he was and is fine, but naturally panic did ensue, a call to the poison hot line and instant immersion education on poisonous plants. This did reveal, as I said earlier, many of them are very common. Just be aware.
I have several planted in the ground and my original one in a large pot. The ones in the ground require less attention than the potted one, however they really require little maintenance.
They like filtered sun desire relief from the afternoon sun in
like in our zone 11.
